Rice: Mubarak is on the Hook

At least he campaigned. … He went to two places in Egypt every day and he campaigned and he talked about how he’s going to overturn the emergency law. Now, he’s on the hook to do that. It’s a change in the relationship between governed and those who govern when consent is a necessity. That is really what changed in Egypt.

They have parliamentary elections coming up. And I think Egypt is the place to watch to see if that trend can continue to be pushed forward.

The Egyptian state news agency MENA has its own spin on the interview: "U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that the presidential elections which took place in Egypt recently were the cleanest she has seen.

"What Rice really said: "I will not tell you that these were the most perfect elections I’ve seen." But hell, what's a negative between friends!
