Here is another funny yes-this-is-so-Egypt part of the story:

“The police officer in charge of permits turned out to be at a football match with his mobile phone switched off, so they decided to go ahead regardless.”

To be fair, even in democracies, permissions for demonstrations are often required, even if the participators are not more than five. Also, how would the police have handled the demonstrators if they had been farmers from the Delta or Upper Egypt demonstrating about prices and land-reforms? [tagged!]
