Suffocated Voters, Terrorists - and Tourists

ITKHANANA -- I had it with you, I am suffocating, is now part of the official political language. A revolutionary term by definition, state media first refused the Wafd party's ads. Now, it is a common slogan.

WRITERS and ARTISTS have taken to the streets again, to protest against the incumbent. This time, some 300 people showed up for today's demonstration.

ALL SINAI SUSPECTS are now behind bar, mostly, officials say. With 3,000 troops sweeping Sinai and detaining some 3-500 people, plus quite a few still locked up from last year's raid, I would be surprised if there are any would-be-bombers left in El-Arish and surrounding villages; except the elderly, women and children. More 'positive' news like this will follow for sure; after all, it is election time.

BIRTH CONTROL is perhaps the only answer to terrorism, at least if we are to believe that everybody caught in the annual Sinai dragnet event are closeted terrorists.

TERRORISTS and TOURISTS typically don’t go that well together. It would be an interesting marketing experience in adventure traveling: Combo Trip, 3 days at the Beach, 2 days Diving Safari, 2 days Safari Sweep – the ultimate hunt for long-bearded Islamists; guided by professional ex-securitate.

SO NOW WE HAVE NEITHER terrorists in the wilderness or tourists on the beach. Hotels will be down with about 50 percent or more – my guess based on this and previous reports. Tourism managers quoted are pessimistic. Yet, it turned last year and it may turn again. It is the fact of the autumn and winter: Egypt has the sun, Europe do not.

FORTUNATELY the government has promised in public that no one will have to loose his or hers job in Sharm El-Sheikh and businesses will be compensated. Right, we will see about that after September 7.
